Welcome to the first of my “Anatomy of an outfit” articles. Hope this series of articles on the blog gives you a few ideas if you are looking for a wee bit of inspiration. If you’re not, then that’s fine too. I’m delighted you are reading in either case. I’ll be trying to cover a few different looks at an attainable cost.
First up is a current favourite of mine. A simple enough combo that anyone will look well in; Slim jeans, smart shirt & suede bomber jacket as below.
The reason I love this outfit is firstly because it is comfortable. Yes, that really matters to me. Secondly, it is suitable for several different arenas. Sunday lunch, night out, visiting friends…all good. You don’t come across as being too dressed up, but still looks like you made an effort. I like that balance.
You may well already have all the ingredients in your wardrobe, but you can add them for relatively small spends; I got this lovely suede bomber jacket for £50 from ASOS through their outlet. Such bargains for timeless items will always pay to you back over the years.
Darker denim works best. Takes you from day to night. Handy that. How many wardrobe changes can a man with a full time job and 2 kids realistically commit to in a day? Get yourself some dark jeans would be my consistent message. A lighter coloured, comfortable shirt (that I prefer to tuck in) is ideal. I have an oatmeal one on from Oliver Spencer here. Then your bomber jacket can fall somewhere in between the two colour wise.
Choose your shoes to suit yourself and your day. Decent casual shoes during the day. Smarter for night or boots like below.
Neutral enough palate overall, that is currently on trend for good reason. That reason in my opinion is that it is a mature, thoughtful way to dress that says I’ve got my shit together in life. Think Scandanavian guys in their 30s and 40s. Subdued style. That’s where we should aim. Simple enough then? Until next time.
Have you picked up those dark denims yet?
