The denim shirt. A classic. A wardrobe staple. A loyal servant. An item of menswear that always delivers. Rugged, smart and almost indestructible. It looks good on guys of all ages, body shapes and sizes. It should be warm, but the cotton lets your skin breathe, meaning comfort. A safe sartorial option, but also a stylish one. It can never be wrong.
These are a few reasons why I love denim shirts. I didn’t own one until I was in my thirties. I don’t know why that happened. It can only have been an oversight or another fashion faux-pas during my formative years. I’m making up for it now. I am on the cusp of somewhat of a denim shirt addiction. Here are some of the ways I get the best out of my denim shirts.
I was knocked sideways a few years back on my first sighting of the modern take on double denim. Namely, black jeans and a blue shirt. So simple. So easy. So good. An easy on the eye outfit that should be harder to carry off for the punch it packs.
It has become more common, but not as common as it should be as it is such a good outfit. It’s one of those combinations that suits all guys. Stone cold classic look for weekends and downtime. Try it dressed up with brogues, wear it rugged with boots or relaxed with white leather sneakers.
What I am always looking for in my clothes is a few outfits that will consistently look good. This means I can go to them on a day when I am short of time or the head is a bit foggy after a disturbed night with the kids or whatever. Basically, a range of fail-safe garments that I can wear without having to think, yet giving the impression I have given it some serious thought. The match up with black denim is just one of these.
Denim shirt and chinos is less music festival more university quadrant. An altogether different look and a classy one at that. It’s something about the blue and the chinos that just lends a sophisticated look. I wouldn’t go in for a preppy look very often, but a guy has to have a few options up his sleeve.
Indeed, it’s almost the perfect casual Friday outfit. Add in a blazer or sports jacket and you have almost wandered off a Ralph Lauren photo shoot. You won’t let anyone down wearing this ensemble. You can extend the preppy vibe to the warmer days, by wearing your favourite denim shirt with some twill (heavy) cotton shorts. I really do enjoy wearing a denim shirt with a good pair of shorts. It gives a wandering around Montauk or Bologna feel to proceedings even if you are only nipping out to get some dishwasher tablets. That’s how a great outfit can make you feel.
Your own favourite way of wearing your denim shirt will take you from the grocery run, to the kids’ parties drop-off to pizza al fresco with a well deserved Pale Ale.
Fit and quality are vital when it comes to your denim shirt. Buy one and buy it well. We don’t accept average denim and crappy coffee any longer (how did we ever survive the 1990s?), so why hand over your hard earned cash and accept an average shirt into your life? It doesn’t make sense for us guys who should know better at this stage. I am a firm believer in our clothes giving contentment in our lives. You should be wearing this shirt in five years time. Ten years time even. In-built obsolescence should not be a feature of our style. Make sure you are happy with the fit. Make sure you feel comfortable and confident in it. Wear it any time you feel like it and enjoy it.
