Sales, sales, sales, sales…everywhere you look. Summer sales are coming to a shop or an email near you. The way the fashion retail industry works is driven by season and the seasons end and begin earlier every year it seems. The upside for us all, is the availability of some great garb and style accessories at a large discount.
It seems that everything a guy has ever wanted for or needed (in a strictly 1st world sense) is up for grabs. However, I have made the mistake of ploughing into these things absent mindedly and squandering my hard-earned on stuff I would later not quite regret, but not entirely get lots of use out of. It’s easy to get carried along on the whim of half price t-shirts only to find I have little room in my drawers for another buy in a similar colour to what I already have. So here is what I am on the lookout for (with a sound fiscal policy in place and a white paper published on my current style requirements).
Yep. I love these. I also despise sandals (a strong sentiment I know, but I’m not keen on the aesthetics of toes), flip-flops and toes in general. Many a style magazine has heralded the return of the sandal as a style symbol. I am not buying into that and I am not wearing them. Ever.
An espadrille gets you to the beach, the shops, the bar, the school gates…and when the weather turns dark and cold, they can be used as slippers for indoors.
Check out Rivieras espadrilles. Made in Spain and they last really well.
Everybody looks better in sunglasses. They make us all feel like we are hitting the set of Mad Men or The Talented Mr Ripley. After a long week or too many craft beers those eyes need shading at my age. They should also protect my eyes from UV rays and stop my crow’s feet multiplying mercilessly!
They are also available at big discounts this month and a guy (seeing as my wife likes to borrow) can never have too many pairs. I just got my hands on a pair of Oakley Frogskins at 40% off. I am so going to be the man around the pool this year. A good pair of sunnies ratchet up the confidence no end. I’m all for a summer pep in the step.
This can be an awkward one. Generally opportunities for wearing these are limited enough, so why bother? Well, I am really sick of my other shirts that I seem to constantly wearing. A new shirt is a fine thing and I thoroughly enjoy wearing one. I compromise on the dodgy climate/Summer shirt conundrum by avoiding short sleeves.
I prefer a long sleeve for versatility and if the sun is baking, then I roll the sleeve. I think it’s a more sophisticated look for me. Stripes are pretty cool just now and can be tucked into some shorts (while sporting those sunglasses) for a smart look. Try your shirts tucked in during the day on a day trip and at night for a wander for gelato or a beer.
My conversion to hats has been painfully slow. Literally so on a couple of holidays after being foolishly sunburnt on my scalp. I dipped my sartorial toe in the water with a baker boy had from Laird hatters of London a while back and I really enjoyed wearing it.
Getting brave now means a Panama hat and another cap (maybe linen?) are on my hit list this summer. What’s the worst that can happen? I am never going to carry it off like Mr Grant or Don Draper, but I will give it a go and gradually become more comfortable in my own skin while wearing hats and caps.
All in all it’s a perfect time for adding a few bits to your style account right now whilst saving some hard cash.
Enjoy your summer!
