My generation of men did not get too bothered by our boxers, briefs or whatever other incarnation our underwear may have taken. Other than keeping the best pair for Saturday nights out (the “lucky” boxers) that is. Times are a changing, with the younger generation of men spending more time and money on all aspects of their appearance. This includes keeping Calvin Klein in holiday homes galore off the back of boxed up boxer short sales.
The older guy need not get too flustered, because we can play it smart when it comes to our underwear requirements. We can do this by investing in some built to last base layers for our nether regions. Our crown jewels deserve the best do they not?
With this long term strategy in mind, let me introduce CDLP, a Swedish premium underwear company for men. CDLP subscribe to the ethos of “do one thing well” by aiming to perfect men’s underwear by providing a comfortable, stylish and sustainable range.
The boxer briefs and trunks (a shorter version of the boxers) are designed in Stockholm and manufactured in Portugal. The packaging is really eye-catching in a vibrant yellow. While the all important contents are pleasing to the eye with a silk like sheen to them. This silky feel and look are achieved by using a cellulose fabric called Lycocell which is sourced from wood.
The Lycocell absorbs dye exceptionally well, so less is needed to achieve the colour pop that will no doubt catch your partner’s eye. The manufacturing process requires less water than cotton would, so adding to the sustainable model. The end result is a good-looking pair of boxer shorts that allow breathability and have anti-bacterial attributes. Pretty important for our busy lives climbing metaphorical mountains every day.
After the fortysomething blog road test I can attest to their exceptional comfort and sleek style. The trunks are great for under work trousers, while the boxer briefs excel under some selvedge denims or chinos at the weekend. Both give a guy great support where it counts (a looser fitting boxer short is also available). They feel so silky that they have instantly been installed as my favourite pairs of boxers. The ones you reach for on a Saturday to copper fasten that weekend feelgood factor. The verdict is a big thumbs up from me.
Comfort and sustainability are qualities we should be looking for from our menswear and it was about time that our underwear packed the same attributes. Thanks to the team at CDLP, us men can have lucky boxer shorts on that might well benefit us and will certainly benefit the planet.
Thanks for reading,
CDLP very kindly sent me a pair of boxer briefs and a pair of their trunks for review purposes (I think I prefer the trunks- just). I resisted the temptation to model the underwear as I thought that maybe interpreted as a middle-aged cry for help. I try not to give the impression of any ongoing mid-life crisis.
