When I was a young thirtysomething man, I decided the time was right for me to get myself a really good suit. I lived in Dublin at the time and the only place to go for a great suit and the associated experience was and still is Louis Copeland & Sons on Capel Street. I was measured from top to toe, asked about what I wanted from my suit and any preferences I had for the cloth and colour. These are top tailors, with a wall lined with the rich and famous being measured for their suits in the shop, so there was no shortage of options. I tried so many suit jackets that I almost lost count. Eventually, I found a suit that sat beautifully on my shoulders and felt just right. The suit I had chosen was a Canali suit. The day was memorable and the suit perfect. Since then, the name Canali has been special to me.
So, I was delighted to be asked to cast my blogging eye over Canali’s collection over ten years later. The suit is a timeless menswear essential if ever there was one and even with a move towards less obvious formality in menswear, a good suit is an absolute necessity for us men. I wear a variety of different combinations of blazers, jackets and trousers to work and to social occasions. Mixing things up with different shades and textures is something I really enjoy, but when the important events come up it has to be a suit or that really special jacket that gets the nod!
Let me tell you a little about Canali and why they are worth a spot in a gentleman’s wardrobe. Giacomo and Giovanni Canali founded the family business in 1934 in a town north of Milan, a time which coincided with the rise of the contemporary lounge suit and so, the era of the sharp-suited gent had truly begun. After the end of WWII, Italian menswear started to gain international attention and an associated fanbase. The 1960s saw suit lapels being narrowed and suits cut slimmer. This was the classic era of suits and I love looking at photographs from this time and a large part of me yearns for such beautiful suits to be as commonplace in 2019. The Canali family were pioneers in the manufacture of menswear in Italy as they introduced machinery into their factory to help with the cutting of their fine fabrics.
Roll onto the present day and, as always, Canali have embraced the changed attitudes towards suiting as we move towards a softer look in our blazers and suit jackets. Sometimes comfort does not have to mean style is compromised and Canali are up to the task of keeping abreast of the times with the Kei jacket The unstructured blazer or jacket is now a companion piece for the office to dinner lifestyle that we often find ourselves leading. I always try to have style and functionality working together in my outfits and as an older man, who has always loved clothes, I should to be able to perfect the art of the smart-casual look. A jacket such as the Kei from Canali is the perfect building block for the smart-casual outfit.
I find dressing well for work to be important as it accents my professionalism and mindset, but when heading out after work for a dinner date or a meal with friends, well, looking good is of the utmost importance to me. Dressing well for these occasions really gives me a thrill and puts a serious pep in my step for the evening and ensures I am suitably attired for the wee small hours of the morning if the night takes me there.
Let’s have a look at the Kei jacket and see how we can wear it with the la dolce vita attitude-
The Kei jacket in navy is versatile and reliably stylish. It can go with dark denim, light chinos or even a navy trouser. In this way you can cover yourself for leisure, family meals out and working life with just one great jacket. This jacket lends itself to a smart shoe or even a sneaker. A perfect array of options are made available by timeless, elegant style.
I love a grey jacket in my formal wear wardrobe. It tends to lend a sophisticated air to an outfit and is less common than suits and jackets in navy. A grey blazer will always look good if it is of good quality and fits your frame well. The soft silhouette will give you an assured presence at your meetings and networking opportunities. Like them or loathe them, work is a necessary evil, so you might as well look good while you are working hard! Try the Kei jacket in grey for some workplace debonair style.
The transition from work, to the gym and then onto drinks (if you are really lucky) is made easier by having an outfit that works in every scenario. Menswear is all about making a stylish entrance. Whether that be heading into work, the reception at the gym and/or then onto meet your partner for a romantic evening. This patterned jacket from Canali is ideal for the Friday that has a lot on the horizon. Your working week is done, you deserve to look this good and it would be hard not to in this great Kei jacket with its exquisite pattern and lovely weight on your recently sculpted shoulders.
So, Canali have given us a modern day interpretation of the suit jacket and so we are perfectly placed for the smart-casual life with a Kei jacket that has our back covered.
