Jord watches in St Louis, Missouri approached asked me for an impartial review of one of their new watches. I am delighted to oblige, so here goes.
First of all Jord produce wooden watches. Yes, wooden watches. Business moguls suggest finding a USP for any product or service. Jord have certainly got one here. I already have a silver watch with leather strap, a gold watch, a minimalist Swiss watch and so on. I don’t possess, nor had I come across a wooden watch. I was intrigued.
On first glance I was impressed. The presentation was great. Possibly one of the nicest presentations I have ever come across! The watch came in a smart-looking sturdy wooden box (already thinking long-term watch, cuff-links and collar stays storage for this box) and the watch was wrapped around a cushion, so keeping it secure in transit. None of that nasty, hard plastic box going on here.
A cleaning cloth and wood preserve finishing oil are also provided with a Jord watch. This presentation shows that it was put together by a group of people who care about the small details. Important that, in what is an increasingly crowded men’s watch marketplace. This bodes well for the actual watch.
I am increasingly interested and committed to sustainable style how I can make it work. The fact it comes with items that will prolong the watches lifespan make it more attractive. A wooden box will also be extremely handy and will be used, not dumped like a lot of watch packaging wood be. The cardboard is obviously recyclable, so there is pretty much no waste here. Very low footprint on this watch from my side. That’s attractive to me and increasingly important.
My Jord watch is made of sandalwood. So, the wood is a beautiful dark shade with a chocolate brown face. The face is quite simple with only the 12 being in Roman numerals, the rest being in single markers. I like the simplicity and the classic face. The face is quite large, possibly a little large for my slim wrist in some folks’ opinions, but I don’t find it overbearing and I love the contrast it brings to some outfits, both in colour and texture. It’s an eye-catcher, but not in the showy, blingy way some watches are.
It is a very light watch. I would very likely forget I was wearing it at this moment in time, if I were not appraising it today. There is a negligible weight on it, which contrasts with one of my metal watches which is like wearing a bag of sugar on my wrist. The feel of the watch on the wrist is pleasant and there will be no metal sensitivity reactions from this timepiece, which can be an issue to some watch wearers.
The watch was barely on my wrist and the compliments were flowing. Unsolicited compliments I must add. I think what is striking is how different the watch looks compared to anything else. That’s what is eye-catching. In a world where men’s magazines and Sunday newspaper supplements are advertising expensive metallic watches to us, it’s a breath of fresh air to have something a little less showy and different on my wrist.
The price point is very attractive. I don’t have 10k+ to part with for a Rolex or Phillipe Patek, so I, like the majority of men, am looking for something a bit different for a couple of hundred Euro/Dollars/Pounds to add options to my accessory range for work and leisure. The range of Jord watches falls within this competitive price range.
Overall I would definitely recommend a Jord watch to stylish guys out there. I like my Jord Frankie sandalwood timepiece. I really do. It’s not pretending to be something it’s not. It doesn’t have Swiss credentials (not always trustworthy I find) splashed all over it or waterproof to 50 metres claims (I always wondered how useful that would be?). OK, it being wooden means I take it off before running the kids’ bath (it is splash proof by the way). Not a hassle at all.
It’s a watch with a difference. That difference will always attract comments and questions as to where you got it. It means it’s light on the wrist and quite a pleasant feel on the skin. It looks good. It looks special. It looks wooden. It is wooden! The packaging is wooden too. It is a slightly crazy concept, but it’s an interesting concept that absolutely works in my opinion and I am happy to now be a Jord watch owner.
